Product Usage - Fether Beauty
Queries related to the ongoing usage of both the Silk Light and Velvet Derma products.
Is the Silk Light painful or uncomfortable to use?
The Silk Light treatment is mostly painless, however users may experience a warm tingle on their skin when using the device.
Will the Silk Light be effective on blonde hairs/light coloured hair or on fair skin?
As the Silk Light targets the pigment of the hair follicle, it will only work where there is contrast between the colour of the hair and skin. Blonde, white and grey hairs are hard to distinguish against light skin, therefore, results may be unsatisfactory.
How much is the Fether Silk Light, and are there any reoccurring costs?
The Fether Silk Light retails for $399 and is a one-off purchase. Once bought, no other purchases need to be made.
How long between each use of the Silk Light, will the hair grow back?
Due to the nature of IPL laser hair removal, the hair does not fall out straight away. The light destroys the hair follicle, which causes it to fall out. After following the 8 week regime, expect hair to grow back significantly slower than it did before the treatment.
How often should I use the Silk Light?
It is recommended that you use the handset once every two weeks for four treatments, and then once a month to maintain results.
How does the Silk Light work?
The Silk Light uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a form of laser hair removal, which targets the hair during the ‘growth’ phase for permanent reduction. The light is absorbed, which transfers the heat to the hair follicle, causing it to destroy the hair.
Will I experience any side effects after using the Silk Light?
Side effects are rare but may include: Slight swelling or redness which will typically subside a day or two after treatment, Discolouration or pigmentation on tattooed skin or darker skin tones.
Does the Silk Light take batteries or is it rechargeable?
The Silk Light is powered by electricity and is plugged into a socket. It does not take batteries.
Do you first wax or shave before using the Silk Light?
For maximised results, users should shave the area 12-24 hours before treatment so that the hair has time to show on the surface. Waxing is inadvisable as it will damage the hair follicles and result in an unsuccessful treatment.
Is the Silk Light safe for all areas of the body?
Yes, the Fether Silk Light can be used on any part of the body including the face, above the cheek bones.
Can I use the Silk Light when I have fake tan on?
This is not recommended, as a fake tan increases pigment in the skin and can confuse the machine, which may lead to dark spots. Avoid tanning for four weeks before treatment, as the lighter the skin, the easier it is to target the hair follicle.
Does the Silk Light work for all skin tones?
The Silk Light works for all skin types except for the darkest skin tones. Dark skin may absorb the IPL light instead of the hair follicle, stopping the device from working.
Can I use the Silk Light during pregnancy?
Whilst there is no evidence against using the Silk Light during pregnancy, it is inadvisable as a safety precaution.
How will the Velvet Derma benefit my skin?

You will see minor improvements in your skin texture after the first treatment, and reduced appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots after 3-6 weeks of regular treatments.
Which skin types are suitable for the Velvet Derma?
The device is suited to all skin types as it has four different settings, depending on the sensitivity of your skin. As it can target multiple skin concerns, the device is designed to cater to most skin types. It is unsuitable for skin conditions such as eczema, sunburn and others, as it may further irritate the skin and cause infections. It is inadvisable to use this product if you are using chemical peels, or products with acids, which may cause your skin to be sensitive. Consult your doctor before treatment if you have sensitive skin or are prone to any skin conditions.
Is the Velvet Derma treatment painful?
No, the only sensations are a light suction, however, it should not hurt.
Will I experience side effects after using the Velvet Derma?
If you hold the device too long in one spot, or have sensitive skin, you may experience a slight irritation in the skin. In order to heal and regenerate, follow these steps:
- Gently cleanse your skin after use.
- Keep the area moisturised to encourage regeneration.
- Avoid sun exposure as the new layer of skin will be more prone to sun damage.
Once the skin is healed, follow the below tips for your next treatment:
- Use a lower level of suction.
- Make sure to only treat each area once, and allow the suction to pull the skin up rather than applying pressure to the skin.
- Hold the skin tight to avoid pulling and stretching the skin.
- Keep the skin clean, moisturised and protected from the sun.
Can I use the Velvet Derma on all body parts?
Whilst microdermabrasion is generally performed on the face, treatment can be effective on other parts of the body, such as arms, shoulders and back.
Do I need to do anything in between Velvet Derma treatments?
While no extra products are needed between treatments, it is important to maintain your current skincare routine and keep your skin healthy and moisturised.
Can the Velvet Derma treat acne?

Can I use the Velvet Derma during pregnancy?
Due to increased sensitivity in the skin, it is best to avoid microdermabrasion treatments when pregnant.
Can I use the Velvet Derma after facial waxing?
All hair removal such as waxing, threading and sugaring should be done at least a week before microdermabrasion. These treatments will remove dead skin cells by nature, so it is important to wait 7 days due to increased sensitivity of the skin.
How long should each Velvet Derma treatment be?
Each treatment should be around 5-10 minutes.
How do I clean the filters of the Velvet Derma?
After each use, simply clean the filter with warm water and antibacterial soap and wait for it to fully dry before placing it back in the device.
How do I clean the probes of the Velvet Derma?
Remove the probe that was used and wash it in warm water and antibacterial soap, then dry gently.
